FAIRFIELD, Conn. - The women's tennis team opened its 2006 campaign with a strong showing at the Fairfield Doubles Festival this afternoon. The Stags had two teams reach the semifinals while a third pair placed fifth in its respective flight.
In the first flight, the duo of Dana Postupack and Paulina Rys picked up victories against Providence College (8-2) and Holy Cross (8-0) to become semifinalists.
In the second flight, senior Alexis Accomando and Michaela Cerrone defeated Sacred Heart (8-2), Holy Cross (8-1) and Hartford (8-1) to become semifinalists.
Also in the second flight, Lauren Bonanno and Gabriela Davila placed fifth with victories against pairs from Providence (8-4) and Holy Cross (8-4).
UConn swept all three flights. In Flight One, the UConn 'A' squad and the UConn 'B' met up in the finals but declined to play the match and were declared co-winners. In Flight Two, UConn picked up an exciting 8-5 victory against Albany while in Flight Three UConn downed Holy Cross, 8-2, for the win.
Fairfield returns to action September 16-17 when it tests its skill on the grass courts at the 2006 ECAC Open Championships in Newport, R.I.
