NEWPORT, R.I. - Freshmen Paulina Rys and Diana Postupack each captured gold medals to help Fairfield earn a third-place finish at the 2006 ECAC Women's Open Tennis Championship over the weekend.
Rys' victory at second singles was not an easy task. In the semifinals, she edged Lehigh's Ariela Cohen, 6-0, 3-6, 7-5, to advance to the finals. In the championship match, Rys defeated Rhode Island's Valeria Chacon, 6-3, 4-6, 7-5.
At third singles, Postupack downed Lehigh's Allison Schwartz, 6-1, 6-2, in the semifinals. Postupack faced Rhode Island's Grace Hedstrom in the finals and was able to pull out the 6-1, 7-5 victory.
Freshman Michaela Cerrone advanced to today's semifinal round of fourth singles but fell to Rhode Island's Nyssa Peele, 6-0, 6-1. Peele would go on to capture the gold medal.
Sophomore Marisa Voloshin fell to Colgate's Jackie Couture by a score of 6-2, 6-4, in the backdraw of first singles.
In doubles action, Lauren Bonanno and Alexis Accomando fell to Niagara's Jacquelyn Cary and Shella Dangout, 2-6, 6-3, 7-5, in the opening round. Bonanno and Accomando regrouped in the backdraw downing Sacred Heart's Amalfe and Price, 6-1, 6-2.
Rhode Island won the championship title with 16 points. The Rams did not have a player finish lower than second. Lehigh, the 2005 champion, placed second (13) followed by Fairfield (12.5). New Hampshire place fourth with 9.5 points. Niagara and Colgate tied for fifth with eight points while Sacred Heart and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute tied for seventh with 6.5 points.
Fairfield returns to action next weekend when the Stags take part in the University of Rhode Island Shoot Out.
