FAIRFIELD, Conn. -- Five Stags advanced to tomorrow's finals of the New England Championships this afternoon during the opening rounds of play at the event. Fairfield recorded 11 singles victories and one doubles victory on the day.

Sophomore Marisa Voloshin (Woodbridge, Conn./Hopkins School) advanced to the finals of Flight 2. She picked up a 6-0, 6-1 win over Stonehill's Daniella Granato in the opening round and then downed Montreal's Isabelle Chrun, 6-2, 6-1. Voloshin will face Rhode Island's Val Chacon tomorrow in the finals.

In Flight 3, freshman Dana Postupack (Kingston, N.Y./John A. Coleman) edged Stonehill's Lauren Rowinski, 6-2, 6-0 in the opening round and then downed Montreal's Genevieve Prairie-Caron, 6-1, 6-0 to advance to the finals. Postupack will face Rhode Island's Nyssa Peele tomorrow in the finals.

Freshman Michaela Cerrone (North Scituate, R.I./Mt. St. Charles Academy) picked up two wins in Flight 4 to also advance to the finals. She opened the day by defeating Providence's Allison Cohen, 6-0, 6-1 before edging out Holy Cross' Kristen Meahl, 6-3, 7-5. Cerrone will face Rhode Island's Grace Hedstrom tomorrow in the finals.

In Flight 5, sophomore Gabriela Davila (Guaybano, Puerto Rico) opened the day with a 6-3, 6-2 victory against Providence's Dara Hawkins-Hodgson. In the semifinals, Davila battled back from a first set loss to Sacred Heart's Mandy Finkelstein to pick up the 3-6, 6-3, 10-5 victory. Davila will face Rhode Island's Amanda Barletta in tomorrow's finals.

Senior Alexis Accomando (Lilitz, Pa./The Hill School) advanced to the finals of Flight 6 with a pair of wins. In the opening round she edged Sacred Heart's Ashley Amalfe, 6-1, 2-6, 10-8. In the semifinals, Accomando was leading Rhode Island's Stef Catanzano, 7-6(2), 1-0 before Catanzano retired. Accomando will face Providence's Jen Cusack in tomorrow's finals.

In Flight 1, Paulina Rys (Forest Hills, N.Y./The Kew Forest School) edged Hartford's Raquel Casino, 6-2, 6-3 in the opening round. In the semifinals, Sacred Heart's Pam Pillo defeated Rys, 6-2, 6-3. Rys will face Providence's Ashley Risollo in tomorrow's third-place match.

In doubles action, Rys and Postupack edged Montreal's Catherine Garand-Butcher and Chrun by a score of 8-6 to advance to the semifinals of Flight 1. In Flight 2, Voloshin and Accomando fell to Rhode Island's Peele and Hedstrom, 8-2. The duo of Cerrone and Davila had a first round bye in Flight 3 and will face a pair from Sacred Heart tomorrow in the semifinals.

The Stags continues action at the New England Championships tomorrow, October 15, at the Fairfield University Tennis Courts.
