FAIRFIELD, Conn. -- Senior Alexis Accomando (Lilitz, Pa./The Hill School) captured an individual gold medal while the Stags earned six silver medals as Fairfield finished second this afternoon at the New England Women's Tennis Championships.
Accomando won Flight 6 of the singles competition with an exciting 3-6, 6-2, 10-8 victory against Jen Cusack of Providence.
Sophomore Marisa Voloshin (Woodbridge, Conn./Hopkins School) was the runner-up in Flight 2 after falling to Rhode Island's Val Chacon, 6-2, 6-2.
In Flight 3, freshman Dana Postupack (Kingston, N.Y./John A. Coleman) won silver after falling to a very tough Nyssa Peele, 6-3, 6-1 in the finals.
Freshman Michaela Cerrone (North Scituate, R.I./Mt. St. Charles Academy) also met up with a tough Rhode Island opponent in the finals. Cerrone was nipped by the Rams' Grace Hedstrom, 6-1, 6-2, to earn a silver medal in Flight 4.
In Flight 5, sophomore Gabriela Davila (Guaybano, Puerto Rico) was the runner-up to Rhode Island's Amanda Barletta. Barletta defeated Cerrone, 6-0, 6-1 in the finals.
In Flight 1, Paulina Rys (Forest Hills, N.Y./The Kew Forest School) placed third with a hard-fought 2-6, 6-1, 10-2 victory over Providence's Ashley Risollo.
In doubles action, Rys and Postupack took silver in Flight 1after falling to top-seeded Maurer and Chacon, 8-2. Rys and Postupack defeated Providence's Gilroy and Shulz, 8-2, in the semifinals. Also capturing silver was the duo of Cerrone and Davila. After the Fairfield pair defeated Sacred Heart's Jessica Schnell and Ashley Amalfe, 8-3 in the semifinals, they were edged by Rhode Island's Barletta and Catanzano, 8-4.
In Flight 2 consolations, the team of Accomando and Voloshin placed fifth after defeating Montreal's Prairie-Caron and Bertay by a score of 8-3. Accomando and Voloshin opened the day with an 8-1 victory against Stonehill's Rowinski and Dircks.
Rhode Island won the team titles after taking gold in four of the six singles flights and in all three doubles flights. Fairfield was second with 61 points while Providence and tournament co-host Sacred Heart tied for third with 47 points. Those teams were followed by Montreal (35), Holy Cross (30), Stonehill (23) and Hartford (9)
Fairfield returns to the courts October 21-24 as it heads to Hanover, N.H. for the ITA Northeast Regional Championships.
