FAIRFIELD, Conn -- Jeff Wyshner resigned as the head coach of the Fairfield University men's and women's tennis teams to accept a head coaching position at the University of Akron. Wyshner will oversee the women's tennis team for the Zips, starting this Fall.
"It has been a honor to have coached the Fairfield tennis teams for the past five years," Wyshner said. "The players I coached here were exceptional student-athletes, and it was a privilege to play a part in their collegiate experience. I will miss them and all the dedicated people with whom I've worked. I believe we lived up to the wonderful tradition of Fairfield tennis, and I am confident that the future of the tennis teams here is very bright."
During his five seasons as the head coach of the Stags men's and women's tennis teams, Wyshner posted 113 wins between the two programs. The women's tennis program registered 59 wins, while the men's squad secured 54 victories. Both teams tallied 10 or more wins in four of five campaigns under Wyshner.
Under his guidance, the women's tennis team captured the 2004 Metro Atlantic Athletic (MAAC) championship and advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in school history. For his efforts, Wyshner earned the MAAC Coach of the Year that season. He was honored again the following year as the MAAC Men's Tennis Coach of the Year after leading the Stags to a third-place finish in the MAAC tourney.
Wyshner takes over the Akron program from Tony Fox, who resigned in May after accumulating a 36-105 overall record.
