Volleyball Falls to No. 12 San Diego 3-0

SAN DIEGO - The Fairfield University volleyball team wrapped up its West Coast swing with a tough 3-0 (26-30, 12-30, 15-30) loss to No. 12 San Diego this evening. Senior Kelly Oliver (San Diego, Calif./La Jolla) led the way for the Stags with 11 kills as Fairfield falls to 0-4 on the season.

In addition to her kills, Oliver tallied five digs and two aces. Senior Lindsey Lee (Hilo, Hawaii/St. Joseph) had seven kills while sophomore Barbie Thistle (Bakersfield, Calif./Bakersfield) notched 23 assists and four digs.

Fairfield started off strong in game one as Brandi Higa (Honolulu, Hawaii/Hawaii Baptist Academy) served the first three points of the match. The Stags continued to roll, extending their lead to 8-3 on a kill by Oliver. The Toreros (2-0), however, came back to tie the game 18-18 on a kill by Jaimaire Sutherland. The Stags were to able to regroup, using a 4-1 run capped off by a kill by Karlie Urbaniak (Canton, Minn./Mabel-Canton) to go up 22-19 and prompt a San Diego timeout. The Toreros came out of the break in full force, outscoring the Stags 11-4 to take the first game.

San Diego began game two by creating an 11-2 deficit for Fairfield. The Stags did not back down, clawing back to within 13-10 on an attack error by the Toreros. San Diego gained some ground by tallying seven straight points to make the score 20-10, a margin Fairfield could not overcome.

The Toreros kept up the fast-paced scoring in game three opening up an early 10-0 lead. Oliver stopped the run with a kill off the block to put the Stags on the board. Oliver later put three straight points up for Fairfield with a kill and two aces to make the score 13-6. San Diego held off the Stags attack the rest of the way and came away with the match victory.

Sophomore Katie Mann (Del Mar, Calif./Torrey Pines) chipped in with four kills while senior Jazmin Pa'akaula (Hilo, Hawaii/St. Joseph) and Higa each finished with six digs.

For San Diego, Laurel Abrahamson has a match-high 17 kills along with six block assists while Jessica Nyrop notched a double-double with 21 assists and 10 digs. Reigning West Coast Conference Player of the Week, Amy DeGroot notched eight kills, four digs and four total blocks.

San Diego out-blocked Fairfield 11-2.

Fairfield heads to the St. John's University Tournament, August 31-September 1. The Stags will face Virginia Tech at 10 a.m. and No. 24 Long Beach State at 5 p.m. on Friday followed by match-ups against St. John's and NJIT on Saturday.
