
Stags Down NJIT 3-0 For First Victory

JAMAICA, N.Y. - The Fairfield University volleyball team entered the win column this evening with a 3-0 (31-29, 30-18, 30-20) victory against NJIT in the Stags' (1-7) final match at the St. John's Invitational.
Senior Kelly Oliver (San Diego, Calif./La Jolla) led the Stags with 13 kills on .429 hitting while senior Lauren Campbell (San Diego, Calif./Mount Carmel) had an outstanding performance, finishing with 11 kills, on .611 hitting, and four total blocks.
Junior Karlie Urbaniak (Canton, Minn./Mabel-Canton) also had a strong effort in the middle by tying a career high with five total blocks. Urbaniak also added nine kills and four assists.
Fairfield hit a season-best .349 for the match and out-blocked NJIT 9-3.
The Highlanders opened up a 12-5 lead to start game one but the Stags made a 4-0 run to get back in the game. NJIT maintained their three-point lead but Fairfield continued to chip away. Oliver pulled the Stags within 20-19 with a kill that dropped into the middle. Urbaniak regained the 22-21 lead for the Stags with a kill. Urbaniak and Campbell then combined for a block on the next play to go up 23-21. The Highlanders stormed back knotting the game 25-25 on an attack error by the Stags. Tied 27-27, sophomore Katie Mann (Del Mar, Calif./Torrey Pines) came up with a big kill to put the Stags up 28-27. The two teams continued to battle, trading points until the score became tied at 29-29. Oliver then slammed home a kill while Senior Jazmin Pa'akaula (Hilo, Hawaii/St. Joseph sealed the victory with an ace.
Fairfield began game two on a strong note by posting the first four points. The Stags extended their lead to 12-5 after a series of Highlander miscues. Fairfield continued their strong attack opening up a 21-13 gap on an ace by Lee. The Stags controlled the rest of the way for the 30-18 win.
Game three was tight in the early going. With the game tied 10-10, Fairfield mounted a 9-0 run behind services by Hanohano to pull out to a large lead. The Highlanders' Baaba Hughes stopped the run with a kill that fell in just inside the backline. NJIT used a run of its own to pull within 21-15 but a tip by Hanohano stopped the spurt. The Stags went on to outscore the Highlanders 8-5 down the stretch for the 30-20 win.
Pa'akaula chipped in with eight digs and three kills along with three aces. Sophomore Brandi Higa (Honolulu, Hawaii/Hawaii Baptist Academy) finished with 16 digs while senior Ashley Hanohano (Hilo, Hawaii/St. Joseph) posted a match high 27 assists along with six digs.
Mann was named to the All-Tournament Team after averaging 3.00 kills, 0.62 blocks and 0.85 digs per game. She also hit .349 for the tournament.
Fairfield is back in action next weekend when it travels to the Seton Hall Invitational. The Stags will face Stony Brook on Sept. 7 followed by Penn and Seton Hall on Sept. 8.
