Stags Outlast Penn 3-1

SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. -  Four Stags posted doubled-doubles, which included multiple career highs, as the Fairfield University volleyball team outlasted the University of Pennsylvania 3-1 (31-33, 33-31, 30-27, 30-27) this afternoon at the Seton Hall Tournament.

Senior Kelly Oliver (San Diego, Calif./La Jolla)  and sophomore Katie Mann (Del Mar, Calif./Torrey Pines) led the attack for Fairfield. Oliver notched her third double-double of the season with 22 kills and 26 digs both of which were career highs. Mann also recorded career bests with a match-high 22 kills, on .404 hitting, with 11 block assists.

Senior Lindsey Lee (Hilo, Hawaii, St. Joseph) tallied her second double-double of the season with 10 kills and a career-high 29 digs. Lee was just one dig shy of tying Fairfield's single match record. In addition, with her kill total, Lee moved into second place on Fairfield's career list with 1,252.

Senior Jazmin Pa'akaula (Hilo, Hawaii, St. Joseph) also made a bit of history for Fairfield finishing the day with eight kills and 14 digs. Pa'akaula became the sixth Stag to notch 1,000 career kills and 1,000 career digs.

Sophomore Barbie Thistle (Bakersfield, Calif./Bakersfield) posted a career high 59 assists along with 12 digs for her second double-double of the year. She also tallied five kills and four block assists.

Freshman Alex Lopez (Fort Collins, Colo./Rocky Mountain) had an strong defensive performance with 20 digs for the Stags.

As a team, Fairfield (2-8) recorded 110 digs for the match, tying the fifth-high single match total in program history. It is the second time this season that the Stags have posted at least 100 digs in a match. Fairfield also out-blocked Penn (0-2) 12-9.

For the Quakers, Laura Black notched 20 kills and 31 digs while Madis Wojciechowski had a match high 32 digs.

The Stags were able to overcome a first game loss to overtake the Quakers in the final three games. In game two, Fairfield let a late lead slip as Penn came back to tie the score 29-29 on an attack error. The two teams would exchange the next several points. With the score knotted 31-31, consecutive kills by Oliver and Lee sealed the win for Fairfield. The Stags also let the Quakers come back in game three, as the frame became tied 27-27. A kill by Pa'akaula stopped the Penn run and Fairfield was able to force two Quaker attack errors for the win. Game four belonged to the Stags who used a big 7-3 burst to open up a four-point lead and never looked back.

Fairfield concludes action at the Seton Hall Tournament this evening with a match against the host Pirates at 6:30 p.m.
