Volleyball Stops Saint Peter's 3-1

JERSEY CITY, N.J. - The Fairfield University volleyball team opened Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) play in a big way with a 3-1 (30-17, 28-30, 30-20, 30-17) victory at Saint Peter's College this evening. The victory was the 94th at Fairfield for Head Coach Jeff Werneke which ties Todd Kress for tops on the career wins list.

Fairfield (4-8, 1-0 MAAC), which has taken each of the last six meetings with Saint Peter's (2-10, 0-1 MAAC), is 25-0 in regular season conference play since 2005. The regular season conference loss came on Oct. 22, 2005 at Canisius.

Senior Kelly Oliver (San Diego, Calif./La Jolla), the reigning MAAC Offensive Player of the Week, led the way for the Stags with 16 kills and 21 digs. The double-double was Oliver's fifth of the season.

Sophomore Barbie Thistle (Bakersfield, Calif./Bakersfield) also posted a double-double with 37 assists and 12 digs for her fourth of the season.

Senior Lindsey Lee (Hilo, Hawaii/St. Joseph), the reigning MAAC Defensive Player of the Week, tallied 15 digs along with eight kills and two total blocks.

Sophomore Katie Mann (Del Mar, Calif./Torrey Pines) notched 11 kills, a .370 attack percentage, and three total blocks while senior Jazmin Pa'akaula (Hilo, Hawaii/St. Joseph),  tallied 12 kills on .364 hitting.

As a team, the Stags hit .258 while holding the Peahens to a .115 attack percentage.

Fairfield continues MAAC play this weekend at Siena on Sept. 15 and Manhattan on Sept. 16. Both matches are scheduled to begin at 2 p.m.
