
Kelly Oliver Named MAAC Defensive Player of the Week
Sep 18, 2007For the second consecutive week, senior Kelly Oliver (San Diego, Calif./La Jolla) earned Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) honors as she was named the Defensive Player of the Week. Oliver helped Fairfield University open conference play with a 2-1 record on the week, averaging 4.10 digs, 3.60 kills, 0.80 aces, and 0.50 blocks per game.
In the victory against St. Peter's, the right side notched her fifth double-double of the year with 16 kills and 21 digs. It was the second time this season that Oliver had 20+ digs. At Siena, Oliver tallied 12 kills and eight digs. She wrapped up the week with 12 digs, three total blocks, a career-high six service aces, and seven kills against Manhattan.
Last week, Oliver was named the MAAC Offensive Player of the Week, averaging 4.73 kills and 4.18 digs per game along with seven total blocks. She was named to the Seton Hall Tournament All-Tournament Team after recording two double-doubles and notched 20+ kills on two occasions. Against Penn, she recorded 22 kills and 26 digs both of which were career highs. She followed that performance with a 20-kill, 15-dig, three-block performance against Big East foe Seton Hall.
On the season, Oliver is averaging a 3.74 kills, good for third in the conference, and 3.35 digs per game. She has appeared in all 14 matches for the Stags, recording double-digit kills in 10 of those contests.
She also has collected 925 kills during her career and is on pace to become the eighth Stag to reach 1,000.
Fairfield (5-9, 2-1 MAAC) will play its first two home matches of the season this weekend, hosting Canisius and Niagara. Both matches are set to begin at 2 p.m. at Alumni Hall.
