FAIRFIELD, Conn. - The Fairfield University volleyball team made quick work of Rider University defeating the Broncs, 3-0 (30-20, 30-22, 30-20), this evening in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) action at Alumni Hall. The Stags improve to 8-9 on the year and 5-1 in the conference.
Sophomore Katie Mann (Del Mar, Calif./Torrey Pines) paced the Stags with 13 kills, a .455 attack percentage, along with six digs.
Senior Kelly Oliver (San Diego, Calif./La Jolla) and sophomore Barbie Thistle (Bakersfield, Calif./Bakersfield) just missed double-doubles on the night. Oliver finished the night with nine kills, nine digs, and three aces while Thistle posted 42 assists and nine digs.
Rookie Alex Lopez (Fort Collins, Colo./Rocky Mountain) had a strong showing for the Stags with 15 digs and a career-best four service aces.
Rider (1-14, 0-6 MAAC) led early in game one, but Fairfield came back to tie the game 7-7. The Stags used a 4-0 run to gain some ground and pushed ahead to 18-11 after a 7-2 burst. Fairfield extended its lead to 26-16, after Oliver served five straight points. As a team, Fairfield hit .500 in the first frame in the 30-20 win.
The Stags trailed 11-9 at the start of the second game, but the Broncs could not hold onto the lead. With the match knotted 11-11, Lopez stepped to the line and served six straight points, including three aces to open up a five-point lead. The Stags never looked back and finished the game with a .317 attack percentage.
Fairfield opened the final game on a 7-2 run and that would be all the Stags needed as they cruised to a 30-20 victory.
Junior Karlie Urbaniak (Canton, Minn./Mabel-Canton) played well for Fairfield with eight kills on .312 hitting and two block assists. Senior Lindsey Lee (Hilo, Hawaii/St. Joseph) chipped in with seven kills and six digs while freshman Lauren Wagner (Eagan, Minn./Cretin-Derham) added five kills and two total blocks.
For the match, Fairfield hit .327 while Rider posted a .202 attack percentage. The Stags outblocked the Broncs 5-1 and held a 10-1 advantage in service aces.
Fairfield will host Loyola on Sept. 29 at 2 p.m.
