Stags Down Peahens 3-0 as Werneke Reaches Coaching Milestone

FAIRFIELD, Conn. - The Fairfield University volleyball team cruised to its sixth-straight shutout with a 3-0 (30-20, 30-18, 30-14) victory against Saint Peter's College in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) action at Alumni Hall. The Stags improve to 10-9 overall and 7-1 in the conference while the Peahens drop to 6-16 on the year and 3-6 in the league.

Senior Kelly Oliver (San Diego, Calif./La Jolla) and sophomore Barbie Thistle (Bakersfield, Calif./Bakersfield) each posted double-doubles as four other Stags were in double figures.

Thistle tallied her fifth double-double of the year of 41 assists and 14 digs along with a pair of kills.

Oliver notched her seventh double-double with 16 kills and 16 digs. With her kills, Oliver brought her career total to 996 and she is four away from becoming the ninth Stag to record 1,000 career kills.

Sophomore Katie Mann (Del Mar, Calif./Torrey Pines), the reigning MAAC Offensive Player of the Week, picked up where she left off tallying 13 kills on .500 hitting along with seven digs and five total blocks.

Junior Karlie Urbaniak (Canton, Minn./Mabel-Canton) and senior Lindsey Lee (Hilo, Hawaii/St. Joseph) contributed 10 kills apiece. Lee also added eight digs to surpass former Stag Jen McLaughlin for second all-time in career digs and now has 1,448.

Senior Jazmin Pa'akaula (Hilo, Hawaii/St. Joseph) stepped in defensively for the Stags tying a season-high with 14 digs.

It was also a special day for Fairfield head coach Jeff ‘CJ' Werneke as he earned his 100th career victory. Earlier this season, Werneke surpassed his predecessor Todd Kress to become the all-time winningest coach in program history.

Fairfield presented a solid attack hitting .318 on the day with 56 kills. The Peahens had just .045 attack percentage and were held to 25 kills on the day. The Stags held a 7-3.5 advantage in blocks and a 9-2 edge in service aces.

The Stags pulled out to a 17-9 lead in game one to set the tone of the rest of the match. Fairfield never looked back finishing with the 30-20 win. With the scored tied 10-10 in game two, Urbaniak put the Stags on top with a kill. Junior Brandi Higa (Honolulu, Hawaii/Hawaii Baptist Academy) stepped to the line and served the next nine points to put the game out of reach. Saint Peter's managed just four kills in the 30-18 loss. In the final game, Fairfield rolled out to an 18-9 lead and outscored the Peahens 12-5 the rest of the way. The Stags hit .548 as a team with 18 kills and just one error in 31 total attempts.

For the Peahens, setter Caroline Garvey recorded a double-double with 15 assists and 11 digs while Yomi Angulo tallied 12 digs.

Fairfield travels to Loyola tomorrow, Oct. 7, to wrap up the season series at 2 p.m.
