
Hofstra Snaps Stags Seven Match Winning Streak with 3-1 Win

FAIRFIELD, Conn. - The Fairfield University volleyball team had its seven-match winning streak snapped with a 3-1 (28-30, 28-30, 33-31, 28-30) loss to Hofstra University this evening in a tight non-conference battle at Alumni Hall. The Stags fall to 11-10 on the year while the Pride improves to 11-8.
Fairfield's home winning streak, dating back to last season, was halted at 14 matches. Prior to tonight, the Stags' last loss at home was on August 26, 2006 to St. John's.
Senior Kelly Oliver (San Diego, Calif./La Jolla) tied a career high with 22 kills on the night while sophomore Katie Mann (Del Mar, Calif./Torrey Pines) posted 16 kills, six digs, and three block assists. Junior Karlie Urbaniak (Canton, Minn./Mabel-Canton) also recorded double-digits with 11 kills.
Defensively, sophomore Jazmin Pa'akaula (Hilo, Hawaii/St. Joseph) tallied 21 digs while classmate Lindsey Lee (Hilo, Hawaii/St. Joseph) added 12 digs and nine kills.
Setters Barbie Thistle (Bakersfield, Calif./Bakersfield) and Ashley Hanohano (Hilo, Hawaii/St. Joseph) combined for 63 of the Stags' 68 assists on the night. Thistle finished with 36 assists and six digs while Hanohano had 27 assists and nine digs. With her assists, Hanohano surpassed Keri Kaiser for fifth on Fairfield's career list and now has 1,652 assists for her career.
It was a see-saw match with 42 ties and 15 lead changes and the exciting tone was set early. Fairfield clawed back from a 24-18 deficit in the opening frame to knot the match, 28-28, after a Hofstra attack error. The Pride's Harmonie Calinda quickly stopped the run with a kill and a Stags attack error gave Hofstra the opening game.
Trailing 24-22 in the second game, Fairfield used a quick 3-0 burst to regain the lead and force a Hofstra timeout. The Stags pushed their lead to 26-24 on a kill by Lee out of the break but Amanda Beyersdorff slammed down consecutive kills to tie the game. The two teams would deadlock at 28-28 on a kill by Mann but Hofstra was able to hold off the Fairfield attack for the win.
The Stags may have fallen behind 16-11 in the third game, but they did not bow down to the Pride. Fairfield chipped away at the lead to tie the game, 20-20, on a block by Lee and Lauren Wagner (Eagan, Minn./Cretin-Derham). Fairfield would open a 23-21 lead on an ace by Pa'akaula and push the gap to 26-22. Hofstra stormed back to pull within 29-27 and held off match point twice to tie the game. With the game knotted 31-31, Mann and freshman Kayla Hughes (Portland, Ore./Jesuit) came up with a huge block to give Fairfield the advantage. A bad set by Hofstra on the next serve sealed the win for the Stags.
Fairfield held a 14-11 lead in game four, but Hofstra went on a 6-0 run to pull ahead 17-14 on a kill by Beyersdorff. The Stags answered with three points of their own to tie the game on a kill by Mann. Fairfield continued to roll opening a 25-21 lead on a kill by Hughes. The Pride did continued to fight, taking a 27-26 lead on a kill by Ashley Legerretta. The Stags stayed close moving within 29-28 on another kill by Hughes but a Lauren Engle kill gave the Hofstra the win.
Hughes finished with nine kills and two total blocks for the Stags while Wagner chipped in with three kills and two total blocks.
Engle led Hofstra with a match-high 23 kills while Beyersdorff added 12 kills. Calinda posted a double-double with 19 digs and 13 kills on the night.
Fairfield resumes conference action on Oct. 12 against Marist at 7 p.m. in Alumni Hall.
