Stags Down Niagara 3-1 to Complete Season Sweep

NIAGARA UNIV., N.Y. - The Fairfield University volleyball team completed the season sweep of Niagara University this afternoon with a 3-1 (30-17, 25-30, 30-21, 33-31) victory on the road. Three Stags recorded double-doubles to help Fairfield improve to 11-1in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) and 14-10 overall.

Setters Barbie Thistle (Bakersfield, Calif./Bakersfield) and Ashley Hanohano (Hilo, Hawaii/St. Joseph) each had double-doubles. Thistle notched her eighth of the year with 30 assists and 17 digs, which tied a career-high, while Hanohano had 16 assists and 11 digs. Rookie Lauren Hughes (Costa Mesa, Calif./Mater Dei) recorded her first collegiate double-double with a career-best 13 kills and 12 digs.

Junior Karlie Urbaniak (Canton, Minn./Mabel-Canton) led the attack with 16 kills while freshman Kayla Hughes (Portland, Ore./Jesuit) added eight kills on .400 hitting.

With the score tied 10-10 in the opening frame, the Stags went on an impressive 11-1 run and never looked back. Niagara used a big run of its own in the second game to pull out to a 26-15 on a Nicole Piette kill. The Purple Eagles were able to hang on to even the match at one game apiece.

Fairfield led from nearly the start of game three eventually opening up a 27-20 lead on a kill by Urbaniak. The Stags closed out the game on a 3-1 run. In the fourth game, the Purple Eagles overcame a five point deficit to tie the match 18-18 on a Stags attack error. Niagara opened up a 28-26 lead on a kill by Lindsay Kriger which prompted a Fairfield timeout. Fairfield regrouped out of the break and tied the score 29-29. With the score tied 31-31, Urbaniak came up big with a kill which was followed by a game-winning block by Urbaniak and Katie Mann (Del Mar, Calif./Torrey Pines).

Seniors Lindsey Lee (Hilo, Hawaii/St. Joseph) and Jazmin Pa'akaula (Hilo, Hawaii/St. Joseph) each played well defensively as Lee finished with 16 digs while Pa'akaula had 14.  Freshman Lauren Wagner (Eagan, Minn./Cretin-Derham) chipped in with three kills and four total blocks.

With today's victory, Fairfield won its 16th consecutive match over Niagara (5-15, 3-8 MAAC).

Fairfield will travel to Canisius tomorrow, Oct. 21, at 2 p.m.
