Stags Topple Marist 3-0

FAIRFIELD, Conn. - The Fairfield University volleyball team captured its eighth consecutive victory over a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) opponent with a 3-0 (30-10, 30-11, 30-18) win against Marist College this evening at Alumni Hall. With the win, the Stags improve to 12-10 overall and 9-1 in the MAAC while the Red Foxes fall to 7-14 on the year and 3-6 in the conference.

Senior Kelly Oliver (San Diego, Calif./La Jolla) led a blistering Fairfield attack with 14 kills on .367 hitting along with five digs. Sophomore Katie Mann (Del Mar, Calif./Torrey Pines) notched 13 kills on .571 hitting while adding four total blocks. Junior Karlie Urbaniak (Canton, Minn./Mabel-Canton) was also strong on the outside hitting .421 and tallying 10 kills.

Fairfield notched a .423 hitting percentage with 53 kills and just nine errors in 104 total attempts. The Stags held Marist to a -.058 attack percentage. Fairfield out-blocked Marist 7-3 on the night.

Seniors Lindsey Lee (Hilo, Hawaii/St. Joseph) and Jazmin Pa'akaula (Hilo, Hawaii/St. Joseph) led the way defensively as Lee posted 20 digs while Pa'akaula added 12. Sophomore Barbie Thistle (Bakersfield, Calif./Bakersfield) had 33 assists and eight digs on the night.

Rookies Lauren Wagner (Eagan, Minn./Cretin-Derham) and Kayla Hughes (Portland, Ore./Jesuit) also played well for the Stags. Wagner finished with three kills and two blocks while Hughes converted six of her seven attempts into kills.

With an 8-6 lead in game one, Thistle stepped to the line and served five straight points to give the Stags some breathing room Fairfield quickly pushed its lead to 20-10 and finished the game on a 10-0 run. Thistle was crucial in game two, serving the first nine points of the match to provide the spark for Fairfield. The 9-0 hole was too much for the Red Foxes and the Stags rolled to the 30-11 win. The two teams were tied 4-4 in game three, but the Stags went on a 6-3 run and never looked back.

Fairfield will conclude its homestand on Oct. 17 when the Stags host Iona at 7p.m. in Alumni Hall.
