Stags Blank Canisius 3-0 for 11th Straight MAAC Win
Oct 21, 2007
BUFFALO, N.Y. - The Fairfield University volleyball team continued its success in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) play as the Stags shutout Canisius, 3-0 (30-28, 30-25, 30-24) this afternoon for Fairfield's 11th straight victory over a conference opponent.
The Stags (15-10, 12-1 MAAC) used a balanced attack and turned out another solid defensive effort. Fairfield hit .266 as a team while holding Canisius (8-15, 6-6 MAAC) to a .142 attack percentage and out-blocked the Griffs, 10-4.
Sophomore Katie Mann (Del Mar, Calif./Torrey Pines) led the attack with a career-high 23 kills on .571 hitting. Junior Karlie Urbaniak (Canton, Minn./Mabel-Canton) tallied 13 kills on the day while rookie Lauren Hughes (Costa Mesa, Calif./Mater Dei) tallied 11 kills.
Setter Barbie Thistle (Bakersfield, Calif./Bakersfield) recorded 53 assists along with eight digs and five kills on the day. Freshman Alex Lopez (Fort Collins, Colo./Rocky Mountain) was a kill shy of her first collegiate double-double as she recorded 10 digs and a season-high nine kills.
Defensively, seniors Lindsey Lee (Hilo, Hawaii/St. Joseph) and Jazmin Pa'akaula (Hilo, Hawaii/St. Joseph) each contributed 13 digs each.
Canisius chipped away at a three-point deficit late in the first game to tie the score, 27-27, on a service ace. Urbaniak stopped the run with a kill to return the lead to Fairfield. After a service error allowed the Griffs to pull within 29-28, Thistle set Mann for the game-winning kill.
Fairfield trailed early in game two, but Lopez put the Stags on top 10-9 with a kill. Fairfield continued to roll opening up a 20-16 lead. That would be all the ground the Stags needed as they came away with a 30-25 win. Fairfield controlled from nearly the start of the final frame and soon opened a 28-18 lead. The Griffs went on a late 5-0 run but it was not enough as Fairfield posted the 30-24 win.
Fairfield will return to Alumni Hall on Oct. 27 to host Siena at 2 p.m. The Stags will look to avenge their only conference loss of the season to the Saints who are undefeated in MAAC play.
