Stags Blank Iona 3-0 in Road Victory

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. - The Fairfield University volleyball won its 13th consecutive Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) match as the Stags downed Iona College 3-0 (30-18, 30-21, 30-22) this evening on the road. Senior Kelly Oliver (San Diego, Calif./La Jolla) led a balanced Fairfield (17-10, 14-1 MAAC) attack with her ninth double-double of the year.

Oliver, who secured the double-double by the end of the second game, finished with 15 kills and 13 digs.

In addition to an attack that hit .274 collectively, the Stags held the Gaels (12-16, 9-6 MAAC) in check, out-blocking Iona 11-4 while holding them to an attack percentage of .109.

For Fairfield, sophomore Katie Mann (Del Mar, Calif./Torrey Pines) collected nine kills on .562 hitting along with seven digs and six total blocks while rookie Lauren Hughes (Costa Mesa, Calif./Mater Dei) had nine kills and a career-high five total blocks. Classmate Lauren Wagner (Eagan, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall) joined the block party with five total blocks along with seven kills, both of which tied career highs for the freshman.

Senior Lindsey Lee (Hilo, Hawaii/St. Joseph) tallied 15 digs on the night to move closer to Fairfield's career digs record. Lee has recorded 1,610 digs during her career and is three away from surpassing Lauren Laramore's mark of 1,612 set in 2005.

With the score knotted 8-8 in game one, Hughes sparked an 8-1 run with a kill as Fairfield pulled out to the 16-9 lead. The Stags never looked back, taking the first game by a score of 30-18.

Fairfield held a slight 11-10 advantage to start game two but Hughes again ignited a run with a kill. This time the Stags jumped out to an insurmountable 21-10 lead. Fairfield went on to take the game 30-21.

The Stags opened the final fame with by bursting out to a 10-2 lead. Fairfield continued to roll opening up a 12-point gap on a block by Mann and Barbie Thistle (Bakersfield, Calif./Bakersfield). The Stags went on to seal the match with a 30-22 victory.

Thistle finished with 41 assists, six kills on .357 hitting, five digs, and three total blocks on the night. Junior Karlie Urbaniak (Canton, Minn./Mabel-Canton) chipped in with eight kills.

Defensively, senior Jazmin Pa'akaula (Hilo, Hawaii/St. Joseph) tallied 14 digs while junior Brandi Higa (Honolulu, Hawaii/Hawaii Baptist Academy) added nine.

Fairfield, winners of 13 of its last 14 matches, will play its final home contest of the year on Nov. 4 against Manhattan. Prior to the 2 p.m. start at Alumni Hall, Fairfield's five seniors will be honored. The Stags wrap up the regular season on the road at Rider on Nov. 8 and Marist on Nov. 10.
