
Stags End Season With Loss to Cal State Fullerton

NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - The Fairfield University volleyball team concluded its 2007 campaign with a tough 3-0 (30-22, 30-23, 30-28) loss to Cal State-Fullerton this evening at the
Fremont Investment & Loan Invitational. In the loss, a little bit of history was made as sophomore Katie Mann (Del Mar, Calif./Torrey Pines) broke a single season record while three seniors firmed their place in the Stags record books.
Mann finished the day with four block assists to break Fairfield's single season record. She brought her season total to 111 surpassing the mark of 109 set by Laura Gleason in 1993. Mann also had six kills on the night.
Senior Kelly Oliver (San Diego, Calif./La Jolla) recorded her 12th double-double of the year with 13 kills and 23 digs along with three total blocks. An All-MAAC First Team pick this year, Oliver finishes her career with 1,182 kills, which ranks sixth all-time, and 895 digs, which ranks tenth all-time.
Senior Lindsey Lee (Hilo, Hawaii/St. Joseph) recorded five digs and an ace in just two games against the Titans. Lee will leave Fairfield as the career digs leader with 1,674 and is third all-time in kills with 1,387.
Senior Jazmin Pa'akaula (Hilo, Hawaii/St. Joseph) tallied 17 digs in the effort. She finishes her career with 1,035 kills, good for ninth all-time, and 1,594 digs which places her third all-time. Pa'akaula appeared in 443 career games for the Stags which ties her with Joanne Saunders for the fifth most in program history.
On the night, the Stags held a slight edge in blocks recording six to the Titans' five. Fullerton held Fairfield to an attack percentage of .181 while hitting .301.
Junior Karlie Urbaniak (Canton, Minn./Mabel-Canton) and freshman Lauren Hughes (Costa Mesa, Calif./Mater Dei) each added 12 kills for the Stags. Setter Barbie Thistle (Bakersfield, Calif./Bakersfield) tallied 38 assists and seven digs on the night. The 2007 MAAC Co-Setter of the Year, finishes her sophomore campaign with a career best 1,303 assists which is the fourth-highest single-season total in program history.
Brittany Moore and Jennifer Francisco each recorded double-doubles for Fullerton. Moore finished with a match-high 20 kills and 10 digs while Francisco had 16 kills and 10 digs.
Fairfield came back from an early three-point deficit to tie game one 10-10. With the score resting at 13-13, Fullerton used a 7-2 run to take the lead to stay. The Stags opened game two with an 8-6 lead but the Titans came back in full force, opening a 20-13 lead, an advantage they would not relinquish.
Game three was close with 10 ties and three lead changes. Pa'akaula gave Fairfield a 20-19 lead with an ace but Fullerton tied the score on the ensuing serve. Oliver put the Stags on top 23-21 with a kill but the Titans evened the score with a 2-0 spurt. Fullerton opened a 29-26 lead but Fairfield managed to hold off game point to pull within 29-28, but the Titans held on for the win.
Fairfield, which earned a share of its fourth-straight regular season conference title, finishes the year with a 21-13 overall record in addition to its 17-1 mark in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC).
