
Volleyball Falls to Penn 3-0

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - The Fairfield University volleyball team fell to the University of Pennsylvania 3-0 (24-26, 15-25, 23-25) this morning in a non-conference match.
Sophomore Alex Lopez (Fort Collins, Colo./Rocky Mountain) and junior Katie Mann (San Diego, Calif./Torrey Pines) each had eight kills. Lopez added seven digs while Mann hit .438 and posted three blocks.
Three Stags were in double figures. Rookie Lauren Balmert (Cranberry Twp., Pa./Seneca Valley) had 20 assists, senior Karlie Urbaniak (Canton, Minn./Mabel-Canton) tallied 13 digs while senior Brandi Higa (Honolulu, Hawaii/Hawaii Baptist Academy) registered a team-high 17 digs.
In the first set, Fairfield pulled out to a 22-17 lead, but Penn came back to knot the match 24-24 on a block by Kathryn Turner and Megan Tryon. The Stags made two costly errors on the next two serves to give the Quakers the win.
With the second set tied 12-12, Penn used a 6-2 run to open up a four point lead. After a kill by Lopez pulled Fairfield within 18-15, the Quakers rattled off the next seven points for the victory.
The Stags erased an early four-point deficit in the third set and battled with the Quakers to a 20-20 tie. Logan Johnson served the next two points for Penn to give them the 22-20 lead. The Stags did not back down, rallying to tie the score 23-23 on a Penn error. But, the Quakers took advantage of a pair of errors by the Stags for the match.
