
Volleyball Stopped By Army 3-0

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - The Fairfield University volleyball team could not overtake undefeated Army this morning, falling 3-0 (23-25, 13-25, 14-25) at the Temple Invitational.
For the Stags (2-3), sophomore Lauren Hughes (Costa Mesa, Calif./Mater Dei) recorded a team-high nine kills. Junior Katie Mann (Del Mar, Calif./Torrey Pines) was next with five kills and two total blocks.
Senior Karlie Urbaniak (Canton, Minn./Mabel-Canton) registered a match-high 10 digs while setter Lauren Balmert (Cranberry Twp., Pa./Seneca Valley) had 16 assists.
Army (5-0) held Fairfield to a .051 attack percentage while hitting .243. Blocks were even at four apiece.
The first set was the closest out of the three with 10 ties and four lead changes. With the score tied 8-8, Fairfield went on a 4-0 run to gain the lead. The Black Knights used a run of their own to tie the frame 12-12. The two teams would continue to exchange points, coming to rest at 20-20. But Army's Malissa Gallini put the Black Knights on top to stay with a kill.
In the second set, Army came out strong opening a 17-7 lead and was able to hold off the Stags. In the third set, the Black Knights opened up an early 14-7 margin. Fairfield cut the gap to 14-11 on a block by Mann and Urbaniak, but Army went on an 8-0 run to put the match out of reach.
