Brandi Higa Reaches 1,000 Career Digs in 3-0 Loss at UConn

STORRS, Conn. - The Fairfield University volleyball team fell to in-state rival University of Connecticut this evening 3-0 (8-25, 13-25, 19-25) at Gampel Pavilion. Despite the tough loss, it was an historic night for senior Brandi Higa (Honolulu, Hawaii/Hawaii Baptist Academy) as she became the ninth Stag in program history reach 1,000 career digs. 

Higa finished the night with 12 digs and now has 1,006 for her career. Last weekend the libero set the Fairfield (2-9) single match record with 34 digs against Towson University. 

Against the Huskies (7-3), sophomore Lauren Hughes (Costa Mesa, Calif./Mater Dei) had a team-high eight kills while classmate Alex Lopez (Fort Collins, Colo./Rocky Mountain) tallied 10 digs and four kills. 

Junior Katie Mann (Del Mar, Calif./Torrey Pines) had three total blocks, tying former Stag Amy Boudreau for seventh all-time with 247 career blocks. 

Behind .556 hitting, UConn controlled the first set coming away with the 25-8 victory. In the second set, Fairfield had an early 5-2 advantage but the Huskies came back to take a 6-5 lead on four straight kills including three from Chauntay Mickens. With the set tied 9-9, UConn went on an 8-1 run to put it out of reach. 

In the third set, Fairfield fought back from an early five point deficit to tie the frame 17-17 on a kill by Lopez. The Huskies, however, responded with a 5-0 run to make the score 22-17 and would not relinquish the lead. 

Fairfield is back in action on Sept. 19 for its home and conference opener as its hosts Rider University at 7 p.m. in Alumni Hall.
