PROVO, Utah -- The top-ranked Stanford Cardinal (4-1) defeated Fairfield (1-3) by a score of 3-1 in the opening match of the Mizuno Classic at BYU on Thursday.
After falling behind 2-0, the Stags rallied to take the third game 15-12. Junior outside hitter Joanne Saunders kept Fairfield in the match with a solid offensive performance, recording 31 kills on her way to a .424 hitting percentage. But the Cardinal offense proved to be too much as Stanford closed out the match in the fourth game 15-6.
Corrine Carlson and Conny Paul also posted double-digit kills. Carlson finished with 10 kills and added 13 digs. Paul knocked down 11 kills. Setter Kelly Sorensen handed out 47 assists for Fairfield.
The Stags return to action on Friday, September 8, when they take on Oral Roberts on day two of the Mizuno Classic.
