The regular season is over for the Fairfield volleyball team, and a new season has begun. It's MAAC Volleyball Championship time for the Stags as they head into the 10-team tournament as the top seed and look to complement their MAAC Regular Season Championship with a tournament title. Fairfield (21-6, 18-0 MAAC) will leave the chilly weather of New England and head to sunny Florida this week for the 2006 MAAC Volleyball Championship at the Disney Wide World of Sports Complex. The Stags will begin their quest for a crown on November 16 at 6 p.m. against the winner of the #8 Rider/#9 Iona match.
The Stags will also look to keep their 18-match winning streak alive. The current streak is tied for third-longest in program history and, as of November 14, was the fourth-longest active winning streak among NCAA Division I schools this season. During the current streak, 14 of Fairfield's wins have been by a 3-0 margin, including shutouts in 11 of its last 12 matches.
Fairfield in the MAAC Championship - Fairfield had a string of five MAAC Championships between 1997 and 2001. Since then the Stags have gone 17-8 in MAAC Championship action. Four of those losses have come in the championship final, including occurrences in each of the past two years. Last season, Fairfield captured the regular season crown, but was edged by Siena, 3-2 (29-31, 30-19, 27-30, 30-28, 15-11) in the final match of the tournament.
Fairfield at Disney - The Stags have appeared at the Disney Wide World of Sports Complex twice. In 1998, Fairfield captured its second-consecutive MAAC Championship with a 3-0 win against Siena. In 2002, the Stags were eliminated by Loyola, 3-2.
Conference Success - Since 1997, Fairfield is 91-8 against MAAC opponents in the regular season.
Big MAAC Attack - Fairfield has been dominant in the its 18 conference matches this season. At 18-0 in the MAAC, 14 of the victories have been by 3-0 margins and Fairfield has dropped just four sets to MAAC opponents all season. The Stags are averaging 5.7 more kills per game and hitting .300 while holding opponents to an attack percentage of .108. Fairfield is also out-blocking opponents 126-79.5, while averaging nearly three more digs per game than its MAAC foes.
Fairfield and the MAAC Regular Season Championship - The Stags captured their third-straight MAAC Regular Season Championship, bringing its total to eight. The championships occurred during in 1997, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2002, 2004, 2005 and 2006.
