FAIRFIELD, Conn. - For the
second consecutive year, the Fairfield University Student-Athlete
Advisory Committee (SAAC) participated in the "Stags Boxes for the
Soldiers" program. All 20 Stags varsity athletic teams collected
food, movies, and other goods for the U.S. troops serving in Iraq
and Afghanistan.
"In keeping with the Jesuit ideals of the University, our student-athletes are committed to giving back to the community both locally and nationally. Once again, our Boxes for Soldiers campaign was a success," said Alison Sexton, Senior Associate Athletic Director and SAAC advisor. "All of our varsity athletic teams were able to get involved in this project and add personal touches to the care packages."
Over the past month, each team was responsible for filling two boxes with items for troops overseas and had the opportunity to include personal touches, such as letters and notes. Overall, the Stags collected approximately 40 boxes of goods and delivered the items to a Give 2 The Troops collection point on Nov. 29.
Earlier this semester, on Sept. 15, the Fairfield SAAC was honored by Give 2 The Troops for their efforts during the 2006-07 academic year. At that ceremony, SAAC was the only university-affiliated group to receive an award. Give 2 The Troops also presented U.S. Senator Chris Dodd (R-Conn.) with an award at that ceremony.
The Fairfield SAAC participates in numerous community service activities throughout the academic year. Already this fall, the Stags have been involved with community service initiatives, including reading at local elementary schools.
Give 2 The Troops is a national nonprofit organization whose objective is to support U.S. troops in combat zones. Since December 2002, the organization has sent more than 46,000 boxes and 15 million letters and cards to troops in Iraq and Afghanistan.
The Fairfield Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) is a
committee made up of student-athletes assembled to provide insight
on the student-athlete experience. The SAAC also offers input on
the rules, regulations and polices that affect student-athletes'
lives at Fairfield.
