Box Score BUFFALO, N.Y. – Sophomore Dan Hopkins smashed a go-ahead three-run shot to give the Stags a 5-4 lead the in the fifth inning, but Canisius was able to scratch out a run in the eighth to take the game and the series from the visiting Stags, 6-5. It is the first series that Fairfield has lost to the Griffs under Head Coach Bill Currier.
The Griffs (12-15, 5-1 MAAC) were the first team on the board against Fairfield's (4-13, 2-4 MAAC) starter Tucker Panciera getting two runs off the bat of senior Jesse Puschek with a two-run double to center. The 2013 MAAC Championship MVP was a thorn in the Stags' side today as he would also hit the game-tying home run in the fifth and doubled to start off the seventh, and ended up scoring the games' deciding run.
The Stags got a run back themselves in the second when Hopkins hit his second career triple to lead off the frame. Hopkins would later score on a Troy Scocca RBI ground out.
Trailing 4-1 in the fifth, Mac Crispino set up Hopkins' blast by singling up the middle which brought home Kevin Radziewicz to make the game 4-2. Radziewicz had a career day at the plate, reaching base all five time, with a single to start off the game and also drawing four walks.
Hopkins would blast his second home run of the season and his fifth in 73 career at-bats which gave the Stags a 5-4 lead. However, the Stags could not hold on as Puscheck answered back with a leadoff homer in the fifth. The Griffs took the one-run lead with a RBI ground out in the seventh.
The Stags had and opportunity in the eighth inning after Canisius walked the bases loaded with just one out. But left hander Eric Stolzenburg would strikeout the next two hitters to get out of the jam.
The four walks but Radziewicz was just one shy of tying the program record which is currently held by three Stags.
Mike Bonaiuto got out of a bases loaded jam himself in the eighth inning.
Fairfield will have no time to rest as they travel yet again to take on Hofstra tomorrow at 3:30pm.
