Box Score NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. -- The Fairfield University dropped its first Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) regular-season game in more than year when host Iona College posted a 4-2 win in the conference opener for both teams. The Stags were unbeaten in MAAC play a year ago with an 8-0-1 record.
The Gaels drew first blood with a goal in the 16th minute as Samuel Adjei converted a pass from Giovanni Esposito that pushed the home team in front at 1-0. Fairfield drew even when Dan Shaw pushed the ball into the net after an assist from
George Newton.
Iona regained the lead with four minutes remaining in the first half as Willya Mekolo accepted a pass from Franklin Castellanos and finished the play with 3:30 remaining, sending the the Gaels into halftime with a 2-1 advantage.
The home team put the game out of reach with a 30-second run that resulted in a pair of goals and a 4-1 Iona lead. Castellanos netted the first goal after being set up by Alvaro Torrecilla at 62:01. Just 23 second later, the Gaels scored off an indirect kick as Torrecilla ended the scoring chance with the goal.
