Men's Soccer Falls To Eighth-Ranked New Mexico By

ALBUQUERQUE,. N.M.-- In its first game of the Lobo Invitational, the Fairfield University men's soccer team fell to eighth-ranked University of New Mexico as the Lobos posted a 2-0 decision over the Stags. Fairfield will play the University of Denver in its second game of the tournament on Sunday at 12:30 pm (EST).

New Mexico scored early in the first half when Devon Sandoval collected an errant header and pushed the ball past goalkeeper Michael O'Keeffe from close range. The shot was one of the Lobos' 11 attempts in the first half, but the only one that was on goal. The Stags managed to put one of their three shots on goal, but it was turned away by New Mexico goalkeeper Victor Rodriguez.

The nationally-ranked opponent came out in the second half and took eight shots in the second half, but it was the team's final attempt that caused trouble. New Mexico doubled its lead with a goal in the 81st minute. After an initial shot that was saved by O'Keeffe, the ball came back to James Rogers who put the ball into the back of the net from two yards away.

The Stags finished the game with five shots, one from five different student=athletes. New Mexico attempted 19 shots with four of those shots being on goal. O'Keeffe made two saves in the Fairfield net, while Rodriguez collected one save.
